NO VACANCY INN

IDENTITY DESIGN
FASHION BRAND

In approaching the No Vacancy Inn re-brand, we thought of what the physical Inn might look like—a special place deep in a remote jungle, somewhere tropical, dusty neon signage, a mixed concept of where the man-made meets the natural or organic. We felt it important to steer clear of obvious connotations and iconography surrounding the “Inn” and create a more mysterious context, leaning into nostalgia that you can’t quite pin down. We graphically juxtapose the past with an aged vision of the future, while celebrating human imperfection through hand-drawn typography. Finally, we evaluate potential use cases, seeding spaces into which the brand can exist and grow.

We explored a human/handmade approach influenced by mom-and-pop signage found throughout the Caribbean. The bulbous letter forms are created on-the-fly, as a bi-product of an organic and naive formal exercise using singular line. When combined they are free to morph as to accommodate various compositional needs. In this way, the typography is a simple yet robust system.
